Geraldton Things To Do

Geraldton has a wide range of things to do being a city located on the coastline and central to the regions.

Just to mention a few activities for Geraldton; Fishing, diving, eco tours to the Abrolhos Islands, swimming, beach walking especially during sun set time, dining at any of the restaurants that feature local produced sea food, nearby Chapman Valley wineries, windsurfing, golf, heritage and historical places of interest or just shopping.

Getting to these activities is simply by using your own car, walking; or for the more fitness conscious - riding your bike.

Windsurfing GeraldtonWindsurfing - Regarded as one of the best windsurfing locations in the world, Geraldton's top spots are readily accessible. Within the town, flat and small wave conditions suiting beginners and intermediates can be found at St George's Beach.

Pt Moore and Sunset Beach can also be suitable for beginners but with larger surf through these beaches, experts will also find the conditions they are seeking. Even if you are not a wind surfer yourself - when the breeze is in and the swell up, head to these beaches to see some awesome windsurfing action. Set against the backdrop of the everchanging Moresby Ranges are 18 beautiful golf holes designed to be as much a part of the surrounding Chapman River A Class Nature Reserve as a challenge to even the most skilled golfer. The Par 72 course is by no means long at 5,871 metres but the tight, tree lined fairways accompanied by thick natural bush make for a game where accuracy from the tee is all important. The lush, fully reticulated, couch grass fairways reward the good tee shot with perfect lies every time no matter what club you choose to play. However, it's the sensational "saltene" grass greens that have made Spalding Park GC famous Australia wide. This salt tolerant grass is perfectly suited to the water and hot climate of Geraldton and makes a putting surface that can only be described as magnificent no matter what time of year you should choose to play.

Abrolhos Islands

The Houtman Abrolhos are a chain of more than 100 islands stretching from North Island to the Pelsaert group. They lie approximately 60 km west of Geraldton and 300 km NNW of Perth and, about 10 000 years ago, were part of the Australian mainland. None of the islands rises more than 14 metres above sea level. They are home to a rich variety of fauna particularly sea bird life. There are tours which go out to the Abrolhos from Geraldton but no visitor is allowed to stay the night on any of the islands.

Today the Abrolhos are home to lobster fishermen and their families who sustain the island's multimillion dollar rock lobster industry. The islands are controlled by the WA Fisheries Department and CALM.

There are tours which go out to the Abrolhos from Geraldton but no visitor is allowed to stay the night on any of the islands.

Coral bombies and colourful staghorn coral provide an underwater maze for your dive.

Ecotours - The Abrolhos Islands is a nature lover's paradise. On dry land, sea lions bask on the shores while a plethora of bird life soar above. In the water, snorkel through the coral gardens, hand feed 30kg Samson fish and watch out for dolphins swimming in your bow waves.

Fishing - If fishing is your passion, the Abrolhos supports many a prized catch waiting to become your next fishing story! Coral Trout, Dhufish and Blue Bone Groper, schools of Pink and Norwest Snapper, Spanish Mackerel, Yellowtail Kingfish and Tuna provide just as much pleasure to catch as they do to eat! Check with the Fisheries Department for areas of the Abrolhos open to fishing.

Pearls - In the crystal blue lagoons of the Abrolhos, the black-lipped oyster cultures one of nature's gems - the pearl. With unique colours, lustres and shapes, ask your jeweller for an Abrolhos Pearl to take home to treasure.
